Piccolo is one of the woodwind instruments in the orchestra. It is the woodwind instrument with the highest range. It is a variant of the flute family and one of the instruments with the highest range in the symphony orchestra.

The timbre of the piccolo has extraordinary penetrating power. It can surpass the whole band as long as it is blown. It is often used for triumphal music or depicting the howls of the wind. Compared with the flute, it appears thin, without rich expressiveness, and is not used for solo performance.
